"A
different language is a different vision of life."
There's more to
preparing
for a language proficiency test than just learning the language,
particularly for students who will later be using the language for
study or for professional reasons.
With its twenty
culturally-relevant
reading texts, "Reading practice for IELTS & TOEFL" is more
than just a collection of language texts and tests; it is a book
designed to let learners prepare for their language certification,
while at the same time discovering some of the background culture that
underlies life and mentalities in the Anglosphere, most particularly in
the UK.
This book is for teaching and learning,
as much as for testing. Each of the twenty units consists of a
culturally relevant text accompanied by IELTS-style reading test
questions, as well as a
useful glossary, plus a language awareness page relating to one or more
language points illustrated in the text.
While the test papers are based on the
format used for IELTS, the
general
reading skills which they test need to be acquired by
students preparing for
any proficiency level English reading
test, including TOEFL and many other tests around the world.
Each unit thus serves four complementary purposes:
- To broaden
students' familiarity with the cultural
background to Britain and other English speaking
countries.
- To present a
range of useful English
vocabulary in context.
- To revise and
in cases explain useful points of
grammar.
- To familiarise
students with the
nature of the IELTS reading
test and other English proficiency tests.
Two thirds of the texts look at life and issues in the United Kingdom,
the others cover topics relating to the USA or life in general.
Units
include texts on... Lords aren't what they used
to be –
How United
is the Kingdom? – Agatha Christie
–
Manchester
United – The Queen who defined a
century
–
The
Golden Age of the Cowboy
– Building houses, building bridges
and fourteen more...
