A Day in London

One Sunday while I  (1) on a course in England, my friend Jo and I decided to have a day out in London. We  (2) up at the station, and  (3) a very early train, arriving in London just before eight. The streets were quiet, as if the city had not yet  (4) up. We  (5) a taxi, and  (6) down to the London Eye on the south bank of the Thames, as we wanted to see the view from the top. We’d  (7) that there would be plenty of room on a Sunday morning, but alas, there were no tickets  (8).
   “I  (9) we should have booked,”  (10) Jo. “I  (11) you so!”
   I  (12) rather annoyed that we couldn't go on the Eye, but we couldn't, so we walked back to Westminster Bridge. Beyond the bridge, Big Ben  (13) above the river, shining in the morning sun. After we’d  (14) a few photos, we then walked over to look at the Houses of Parliament. From there we wandered up to Trafalgar Square, and  (15) two hours in the National Gallery, where we  (16) some very famous works of art. By the time we  (17) out of the gallery it was after 1 p.m., so we  (18) something to eat from a van in the street. I  (19) a bacon sandwich, and Jo  (20) a hot-dog. We  (21) on a bench, eating our snacks, when suddenly I  (22) someone I hadn't  (23) for years! It was my old friend Dave. I  (24) he was working in London, but I hadn't  (25) his address. He didn't  (26) me, so I tried to call him, but I quickly  (27) him in the crowd. After lunch we walked along Fleet Street, past St. Paul’s Cathedral, before crossing the Thames on the Millennium Bridge, which was  (28) in the year 2000. By the time we  (29) the Tower, it had  (30) to rain. As we hadn't  (31) umbrellas with us, we  (32) to the nearest underground station. Going too fast, I  (33) up on the pavement, and (34) over; but fortunately I was not  (35). It was rather funny! As we  (36) home on the train, I  (37) about the day in my diary. I had  (38) how much I enjoyed walking round cities, and I  (39) I would remember my day in London for a long time.
