CULTURAL
STUDIES - AREA STUDIES
Languages are inseparable from the societies which have produced them;
it follows tharefore that students in
higher education - university, institute of further education - who
want to master the English language, also need to discover
and
understand the cultures, the societies and the mentalities of the main
English-speaking countries, Britain and
the
United States.
The term "area studies" is now used in
universities worldwide to describe courses in which the study of a
foreign language is accompanied by a study of the
institutions,
culture and society of the countries using the language. It is a
cross-disciplinary field of study, and university language departments
that offer area studies courses may include specialists in many
different disciplines, notably history and geography, sociology,
politics and economics. In French-speaking countries and Hispanic
countries, "area studies" is frequently referred to as "civilisation
studies".
Area studies are the new face of Modern Language
studies : graduates with language skills combined with a knowledge of
the foreign countries and cultures find many more and more varied
opportunities on jobs markets. Their skills are generally more relevant
to employers than are those of graduates from more traditional language
courses, involving mainly the study of literature and / or linguistics.
Many
of the articles in graded English, found in the reading resourses
sections of Linguapress.com, have a cultural content. But in addition
to these, Linguapress.com has now partnered with About-Britain.com, to
provide learners with essential information about life and institutions
in Britain, as well as a guide to visiting Britain.
French speakers and other
students with a good knowledge of French can find equivalent pages, in
French, on the "Civilisation"
pages of our partner website Angleterre.org.uk .
For information on culture and society in the USA, and eventually
other English speaking countries, Linguapress is looking for
appropriate partner sites, and welcomes suggestions.
Meanwhile, we have posted one key article on American life, which will
be of interest to students from around the world
