English is full of picturesque expressions, which turn ordinary adjectives into more interesting phrases. Some of these are quite obvious, others are not.A "simile" is an expression that compares things using the words "like" or "as" : for example
As black as night .
This one is very easy to understand !
Here are ten more well-known "similes" using common English adjectives. Unfortunately our silly student Sam Scatterbrain has got them mixed up.... Try to correct the expressions : some are quite obvious, others are not. All the words you need are in a different simile, where they are crossed out.
- This suitcase is as light as a brick.
- The children were all as good as a cucumber .
- When the fire-alarm sounded, everyone got out as quick as snow.
- This exercise is as easy as snail .
- The cake she baked was as hard as a pie.
- The Delta region is as flat as a feather.
- The new singer is as cool as a whistle .
- He's always last to finish: he's as slow as a flash.
- The walls had just been repainted, and they were as white as a pancake.
- I've washed this pot three times, and now it's as clean as a gold .
